Simplifying Computer Networking
Wednesday, February 5, 2014
Computer networking (as
evident from the name) refers to a cluster of computers that are connected to
one another through devices. Cat5 cables and network cards are common network
cables by which computer networks are connected. In a few instances, wireless
routers are also used for connecting computer networks. The objective behind
the connectivity is to help computers communicate with each other easily. So
whether it is transmitting files from one system to another or connecting the
internet in all computers using one connection – computer networking makes it
all possible.
Types of Computer
Networks
·
LAN (local area network) – It usually covers
small areas, such as a home or a small office. Router is used to connect the
network.
·
CAN (Campus area network) – It usually covers
institutes and college campuses. It is made up of several LANS.
·
MAN (metropolitan area network) – It is made
up of several CAN computer networks. Routers and hubs are used to connect the
network.
·
VPN (virtual private network) – It is the
most secure and is commonly used in larger environments. No wires and cables
are required to connect the network.
Computer Networking – As
a Career Option
Establishing a career in
computer networking is a challenge. This is because computer networking jobs
require professionals to hold thorough knowledge about the networking systems.
To begin in the right way, it is required to first learn the basics of computer
networking followed by non-traditional manners to gain pre-job experience.
Steps to become a Computer
Networking Professional
·
Take a computer course that covers basic
computer networking skills. Look for reputed institutes. Look for
certifications in Cisco’s CCNA, Microsoft’s MCSE and Sun Microsystems.
Note:
Hardware
and networking institutes in Kolkata are specifically quite
popular. The decision to undertake networking course in Kolkata can be a good
career move.
·
During the course, emphasize on comprehending
connections and how networks work. Also focus on computer architecture, PC
configuration and microprocessors.
·
Many students practice computer networking by
setting up a network at home. You can also try it out. You can create a
wireless network using a router or set up a LAN connection between the
computers.
·
Many computer networking scholars have
published their own books. Reading them online can be helpful. You can get a
deeper insight into fundamental principles of computer networking. Moreover, studying
these books can help you grasp the class lectures better.
·
Once, you have completed your training, look
for a volunteer position or temporary placement to gain experience in computer
networking. Best places to start this
can be - Non-profit institutions, schools etc where often they require
volunteers holding computer networking skills.
·
Many employment agencies too, look for new
graduates or people with little to no experience to fill up temporary
positions. Remember working in these types of position can be really gainful.
You will gain experience that you can put on your resume for full-time jobs in
computer networking.
·
Post the completion of your on-job training;
create a resume that highlights your qualifications and relevant experience. Do
not forget to include any computer networking certifications you may have.
·
Use a job search website that solely focuses
on computer networking fields. You will be able to quickly find computer
networking jobs in these compared to the general job search sites.
