Wednesday, February 5, 2014

Computer networking (as evident from the name) refers to a cluster of computers that are connected to one another through devices. Cat5 cables and network cards are common network cables by which computer networks are connected. In a few instances, wireless routers are also used for connecting computer networks. The objective behind the connectivity is to help computers communicate with each other easily. So whether it is transmitting files from one system to another or connecting the internet in all computers using one connection – computer networking makes it all possible.

Types of Computer Networks

·         LAN (local area network) – It usually covers small areas, such as a home or a small office. Router is used to connect the network.

·         CAN (Campus area network) – It usually covers institutes and college campuses. It is made up of several LANS.

·         MAN (metropolitan area network) – It is made up of several CAN computer networks. Routers and hubs are used to connect the network.

·         VPN (virtual private network) – It is the most secure and is commonly used in larger environments. No wires and cables are required to connect the network.
