A career in fitness is very rewarding and there are many different job opportunities to explore. Here are some of the most popular fitness careers, many which are entry-level.
Group Fitness Instructors teach a variety of exercise formats. You can specialize in just one or teach a variety of them to be more marketable. Some of the formats you can teach are spin, step, yoga, pilates, cardio, and sculpt. Many instructors combine formats into a class such as cardio sculpt or yogalates. To become an instructor you should get a group exercise certification, become CPR certified and take workshops that are specifically for instructors. A good way to get started is to shadow an instructor in a class and then start as a substitute teacher.
Aqua Instructors teach exercise in the water. There are also a variety of formats they can teach including water aerobics, tai chi in the water, and resistance training. Aqua instructors may use special props to be used in the water such as water weights made of styrofoam. Instructors can teach either in the water with the students or just stand outside the pool to demonstrate the exercises. If you want to teach water classes you can take special workshops that educate you how to instruct these classes.
Dance Exercise Instructors have become very popular in the past few years. More and more people want to have fun when they exercise. Zumba, country-line dancing, bellydance and hip-hop dance instructors are very much in demand. These specialty classes can be taught at a variety of settings since there is no equipment required other than a music system.
Senior Exercise is another growing area in the exercise industry. With the aging population there is a need for exercise professionals to help people who want to stay healthy. Many of the exercise formats can be modified for seniors by teaching them while seated in chairs. Look for workshops that cater to exercise for older adults.
Personal Trainers work with people individually or in small groups. As a personal trainer you will educate people about healthy eating and how to exercise. Trainers implement programs that give specific exercises to their clients that promote strength, increase aerobic capacity and aid in flexibility. Trainers can get further education and work with special populations such as seniors or those who are rehabilitating from injury and illness. To become a personal trainer you should get a national certification and take workshops to learn a variety of exercises.
Fitness sales and management careers are for those who enjoy working with people, wellness and sales. These jobs can be found in health clubs, hotels and other community organizations that have wellness centers. These careers ask for sales experience as well as an interest in health and fitness.
Exercise careers are always changing as people invent new formats every year. Seek out educational opportunities and certifications and you will be on your way to a new career.
