Emigration Trends in Medical Jobs

Monday, January 24, 2011

The demand for qualified medical professionals in the high-income countries of the world poses a good incentive for candidates from other parts of the world to shift base. They have their own reasons for leaving their native country when it comes to professional opportunities as well. The work conditions might be especially difficult for doctor jobs. While the final decision to migrate to a different country might be personal, it is also important to consider the political, social and economic context in which the decision is made. Poor conditions would definitely lead to a greater inclination towards emigration, thus leading to a stage where there are minimum workers and a greater workload for the professionals involved.

It is quite an irony that while South Africa serves as the source pool for medical professionals for a number of countries, a large number of the doctors employed in the rural parts of the country are foreign nationals. Doctor jobs in South Africa witness the incumbents opting for the private sector instead of the public sector for good working conditions and profitable careers. Apart from doctors, nurses are also seen shifting base to other countries, especially the United Kingdom. The situation is quite an alarming one considering the fact that the number of HIV/AIDS affected patients in the region is quite high.

There is no denying the fact that South African healthcare professionals are in great demand all across the globe. This is because of the fact that they receive exceptional training at home. Many countries have hired the services of medical professionals from South Africa, such as Canada, and have even gone on to initiate active recruitment campaigns. This apart there are private agencies, dedicated to the recruitment of doctors in the country. Medical recruitment agencies often specialise in the recruitment of locums, or temporary doctors who are appointed when permanent doctors are on leave.
